5 tips for sustainable and local travel

  • Try to avoid eating in large fast food chains. Look for local markets, food trucks and stands offering flavors and smells of the place. You support the economy of the place and the work of the locals, while you taste the most authentic of gastronomy. At best, look for cooking and someone to show you how to make recipes from the place.

  • Do not stay in large hotel chains, enough of the all included. Look for some service that allows you to share with the locals and live like them. Couchsurfing, for example, has been fundamental to me. AirBNB allows you to rent to locals, etc. Forget about taxis, airplanes, big ships. Luxury is unnecessary. If you want to live an experience rich in emotions and learning, travel by public transport. Trains, bus... and if you can hitch hike, do not think twice.

  • When looking for gifts, be sure to visit the local artisans. Leave aside shopping malls and all made in China stores. Support traditional offerings, know those who create and work products and pieces. Keep fair trade in mind.

  • Be aware and respectful of the resources and spaces you visit. Think about what you can bring to the place you go to. Maintain harmony with nature and heritage. Discover and protect, and urge others to do so.

  • Look for workshops, courses, tours and exchanges with locals. Learn firsthand and multiply your experiences when traveling. Surely you will never forget them.
